Songwriting Competitions

The Song is the star …

words of insipiration, from a very wise old man.  Ask me about it sometime I will tell you the story.

RJ Entertainment songwriting competitions are not Canadian idols or performance competitions, they are about the song and more specifically the songwriting.  The judges are all industry professionals looking for excellence of the songwriting technique in the following categories: lyrics, melody, composition and originality.

These competitions are about bringing songwriters out of the woodwork and onto the stage.  It is an amazing opportunity for networking and to bring your songs to life.  Each artist will be videotaped and posted on youtube as well as photographed by a professional photographer.  This is a chance for the amateur songwriter to put together a package to get your music out there.    Remember never give up, never surrender.

“What Robbie Hancock (RJ Entertainment) brings to songwriting competitions is the true focus on the soul of the song itself.  Robbie’s mantra “The Song Is The Star” isn’t just a catchprase or clever marketing slogan, but a purpose and drive to strip away the “American Idol-ness” and shine the spotlight on the art and craft of the song.  I think this is one of the strong points of Robbie’s songwriting competitions, and what draws artists and appreciate fans alike.  Speaking with people in the crowd I met people that had come back time after time because they were a fan of the songs.”

- Steve Zyromsky

Cambridge/Kitchener  songwriting competition head judge and owner of Badly Bent Records

I’m extremely impressed with the organization of the Cambridge Songwriting Competition by RJ Entertainment.  Not only did Robbie enlist competent and credible judges, but he instituted a written set of judging criteria to help them evaluate the songs performed.  The performances were scheduled with enough time for changeover between performers, and the atmosphere was very friendly.  With plenty of communication via email and facebook, the rules and the process for the competition were clearly described, and the competition seemed to run smoothly every step of the way.  When it came to the final night of competition, the level of talent was so high that I was convinced the decision could have gone to nearly any of the performers.  It was a fantastic night of musical entertainment, and the icing on the cake for me was when Robbie announced that I was the first place winner!  Regardless of the prizes, this event showcased some of the amazing talent in our region’s independent music scene, and allowed me personally to meet several local songwriters with whom I’ve already begun working regularly.

“I’m really glad that I was a part of the Cambridge Songwriting Competition.  It is nice that the emphasis was on the actual songs because I personally respect the art of songwriting immensely  It was especially great meeting lots of local musicians and songwriters.  Aside from coming in second, the next best part was forging some new friendships and feeling more a part of the music community”

Joni NehRita “I found using Paypal a quick and efficient way of registering for the Competition.  I know people tend to shy away from that sort of thing, but it’s a safe, easy and timely way to pay or receive funds” Joni Nehrita – Winner 2nd place (2009 Cambridge songwriting competition) “As nice as winning $1500 is, the real prize is getting to make new friends and reconnecting with good people.” – Ian Reid (Winner 2009 Kitchener Songwriting Competition)
